SJSU Salzburg Projects (2011-2012)
One of the most important components of the SJSU Salzburg Program is the commitment that SJSU Salzburg Fellows and SJSU Salzburg Scholars make to collaborate on projects for globalizing the University during their required year of service. Ideas for SJSU Salzburg Projects (2011-2012) this year were generated during two meetings (9/22/11 and 10/7/11) and also include suggestions from previous years that were either not addressed or not completed by the end of the 2010-2011 academic year. Fellows and Scholars choose which projects they wish to work on during the year, based on the initial proposals for those projects, and then they jointly shape both the focus and the scope of their work together. Participants are expected to submit reports at the end of the year that briefly summarize the results of their projects and other activities during the year. This year there are 33 Salzburg Fellows and 21 Salzburg Scholars working on 42 projects in 6 major categories:
Institutional Projects
Strategic Planning. Establish global citizenship as a major institutional priority in the new SJSU Strategic Plan, as described in the Global Citizenship @ SJSU – A Call to Action, and help the campus develop an integrated collaborative strategy for implementing it. Two major goals are to [1] identify global citizenship as 1 of 3 campus themes selected for the WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) Educational Effectiveness Review; and [2] become part of the ACE (American Council on Education) Internationalization Laboratory. Project conducted by Bill Reckmeyer (Director), Lynda Heiden (2011 Salzburg Fellow), Tim Hendrick (2011 Salzburg Fellow), Dennis Jaehne (2006 Salzburg Fellow), Kathleen Roe (2011 Salzburg Fellow), Beth von Till (2006/2010 Salzburg Fellow), and Ruth Wilson (2011 Salzburg Fellow).
Campus Governance. Develop strategies to engage the Academic Senate in globalizing the university, including the organization of a retreat on Globalization in Spring 2012. Project conducted by Lynda Heiden (2011 Salzburg Fellow) and Beth von Till (2006/2010 Salzburg Fellow).
Community College Outreach (San José City College). Expand and consolidate opportunities for collaboration, linkages, and transfer paths between SJSU and SJCC. Project conducted by Mary Conroy (2011 Salzburg Fellow), Karen O’Neill (2008 Salzburg Fellow), and Bill Reckmeyer (Director) in coordination with Dennis Jaehne (2006 Salzburg Fellow).
Community College Outreach (West Valley College). Expand and consolidate opportunities for collaboration, linkages, and transfer paths between SJSU and WVC. Project conducted by Bill DeVincenzi (2011 Salzburg Fellow), Tim Hendrick (2011 Salzburg Fellow), and Peter Young (2011 Salzburg Fellow) in coordination with Dennis Jaehne (2006 Salzburg Fellow) and Bill Reckmeyer (Director).
SJSU International House. Explore development of SJSU Ambassador Program to engage students and staff in welcoming international students on campus. Project conducted by Nancie Fimbel (2011 Salzburg Fellow) and Jade Law (2011 Salzburg Fellow).
SJSU Global Gateway. Develop and launch a single point-of-entry web portal for internal and external audiences that makes it easy for people to locate globally oriented activities and resources (people, programs, partnerships, courses, opportunities, etc) at the University. Project conducted by Peter Young (2011 Salzburg Fellow), Tim Hendrick (2011 Salzburg Fellow), Patrick Roteman (2011 Salzburg Scholar), and Howard Summers (Salzburg Friend) in coordination with Bill Reckmeyer (Director) and with the help of Dondi Bogusky (IT Manager for International & Extended Studies) and the DBH Communications Agency.
SJSU Global Inventory. Gather data about globally oriented activities and resources (people, programs, partnerships, courses, opportunities, etc) from University colleges and other major units to populate the SJSU Global Gateway. CoB Global Website. Create a web presence to identify all of the internationally-oriented opportunities (activities, courses, programs, etc) in the College of Business and then advertise them to students, alumni, corporate sponsors, and other interested audiences. This website will be linked into the Global Gateways project identified above. Curricular Projects
AAC&U 7 Revolutions Program. Explore applicability and value of SJSU participating in this recent national initiative by AASCU (American Association of State Colleges & Universities), which it has developed in partnership with CSIS (Center for Strategic & International Studies) and the New York Times to promote Globally Competent Citizens. Benefits include regular institutes, a set of curricular materials, variety of web-based resources, and network of other state colleges and universities like SJSU. Project conducted by Dennis Jaehne (2006 Salzburg Fellow), Bill DeVincenzi (2007/2011 Salzburg Fellow), Michael Fallon (2010 Salzburg Fellow), Katie Louey (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Mary Nino (2011 Salzburg Fellow), and Bill Reckmeyer (Director).
Global Citizenship Course. Develop an upper-division interdisciplinary course (possibly SJSU Studies) for the Global Studies Program and other relevant majors, to be taught a variety of SJSU Salzburg Fellows and other campus colleagues. Project conducted by Mike Conniff (2009 Salzburg Fellow), Katie Louey (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Mark McKenna (2009 Salzburg Fellow), Matt Cabot (2009 Salzburg Fellow), Bill Reckmeyer (Director), and Andy Wood (2010 Salzburg Fellow).
Global Issues Course. Develop an upper-division interdisciplinary course (possibly SJSU Studies) built around series of presentations by leading topical experts at SJSU, team-taught by a mix of SJSU Salzburg Fellows and other selected campus colleagues. Project conducted by Mak Akhtar (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Alberto Gutierrez (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Dennis Jaehne (2006 Salzburg Fellow), Brandyn Jandrew (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Justin Lau (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Katie Louey (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Mary Nino (2011 Salzburg Fellow), and Bill Reckmeyer (Director).
Provost’s Honors Seminar. Expand this new legacy program for the University’s top students (President’s Scholars, Dean’s Scholars, and Salzburg Scholars), taught by faculty members who have been honored as SJSU Outstanding Professors. Seminar topics and learning outcomes vary, since they will reflect the expertises and interests of the faculty, but all seminars must focus on a major issue affecting human culture around the world with an emphasis on civic knowledge and engagement from the local to the global levels. SJSU Curriculum Strategy. Using data about globally oriented courses gathered for the SJSU Global Gateway, develop a strategy (similar to that for information literacy) to develop SLOs for global citizenship in SJSU Studies courses that can be used in multiple majors across campus. Project conducted by Steve Branz (2007 Salzburg Fellow) in coordination with Dennis Jaehne (2006 Salzburg Fellow) and Bill Reckmeyer (Director).
Virtual Abroad Course. Develop and staff an on-line course on global citizenship for Spring 2012, including variety of opportunities to serve as teaching assistants and group leaders during virtual sessions. Project conducted by Ruth Wilson (2011 Salzburg Fellow), Alberto Gutierrez (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Joan Torne (2011 Salzburg Fellow).
Corporate Sustainability. Develop a PowerPoint presentation and related materials to educate people about the role of corporate sustainability in a global world and its importance for global citizenship, no matter what one’s major or career. Project conducted by Mak Akhtar (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Darci Arnold (2006 Salzburg Fellow), and Eva Roa (2011 Salzburg Scholar).
Global Jazz. Develop a multi-media presentation on Jazz – The Ultimate World-Fusion Music that examines how this global musical genre has spread around the world through a cross-pollination of new ideas from other cultures and other countries. This presentation is intended to complement and follow on Reinhold Wagnleitner’s acclaimed informance on Jazz – The Classical Music of Globalization. Project conducted by Cynthia Ly (2011 Salzburg Scholar) and Brad Stone (2008 Salzburg Fellow).
Pathways to the World. Develop disciplined-based collateral that identify routes to global citizenship at SJSU, no matter what the major. Project conducted by Dennis Jaehne (2006 Salzburg Fellow) and Katie Louey (2011 Salzburg Scholar).
Operations Projects
SJSU Salzburg Fellows Selection Committee. Evaluate applications and develop rank-ordered recommendations to select 10-15 Fellows for 2012-2013. Committee chaired by Brad Stone (2006 Salzburg Fellow) with Mak Akhtar (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Thalia Anagnos (2009 Salzburg Fellow), Lynda Heiden (2011 Salzburg Fellow), Asmara Hoo (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Laurie Morgan (2008 Salzburg Fellow), and Peter Young (2011 Salzburg Fellow).
SJSU Salzburg Fellows Program. Coordinate the SJSU Salzburg Fellows Program for 2012-2013. Responsibilities include helping to select the 2012 SJSU Salzburg Fellows and coordinate a mix of orientation other activities for the new Fellows during the Spring 2012 semester before they attend ISP #54 at the Salzburg Global Seminar next July (7/8-15/12). Project conducted by Brad Stone (2008 Salzburg Fellow) and Justin Lau (2011 Salzburg Scholar).
SJSU Salzburg Scholars Selection Committee. Evaluate applications and develop rank-ordered recommendations to select 10-15 Scholars for 2012-2013. Committee chaired by Andy Wood (2010 Salzburg Fellow) with Michael Kimbarow (2008 Salzburg Fellow), Adessa Kiryakos (2010 Salzburg Scholar), Katie Louey (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Cynthia Ly (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Robin Mara (2008 Salzburg Scholar), and Beth von Till (2007/2010 Salzburg Fellow & 2011 Salzburg Faculty Advisor).
SJSU Salzburg Scholars Program. Coordinate the SJSU Salzburg Scholars Program for 2012-2013. Responsibilities include helping to select the 2012 SJSU Salzburg Scholars, coordinate a mix of orientation sessions and other activities for the new Scholars next Spring, establish peer mentoring arrangements between current/new Scholars, and make travel arrangements for their trip to attend ISP #53 at the Salzburg Global Seminar in June (5/30/12-6/6/12). Project conducted by Andrew Wood (2010 Salzburg Fellow) and Justin Lau (2011 Salzburg Scholar) with support from Janet Bingham (2011 Salzburg Scholar) and the Salzburg Scholars Club.
SJSU Salzburg Communications. Work with SJSU’s DBH Communications Agency to promote campus visibility of the Program and selected activities on a regular basis – including public relations, advertising, marketing, news coverage, and web presence through electronic and traditional print media – and develop a comprehensive operations manual for Program leadership. Infrastructure & Resources
SJSU Salzburg Survey. Develop, administer, and analyze a survey to evaluate the institutional and individual impact of the SJSU Salzburg Program. Results are intended to provide a comprehensive catalogue of key contributions (group projects and individual activities) that Salzburg Fellows and Scholars have made to globalize the university since 2006, identify their career paths since being selected for the Program, and illuminate how their experiences have strengthened their capabilities as global citizens. Project conducted by Peter Young (2011 Salzburg Fellow), Mary Conroy (2011 Salzburg Fellow), and Eva Roa (2011 Salzburg Scholar) in coordination with Mark Novak (2006 Salzburg Fellow) and Bill Reckmeyer (Director).
SJSU Salzburg Video. Produce a video record, including promo and general documentary, to share the Program’s story with a variety of audiences (campus administrators, prospective participants, potential donors, and general public) that highlights its personal, institutional, multicultural, and global aspects. Project conducted by Andy Wood (2010 Salzburg Fellow) and Dwayne Abella (2010 Salzburg Scholar) with the help of SJSU’s DBH Communications Agency.
SJSU Salzburg Photo Library. Collect and organize photos by SJSU Salzburg Fellows and Scholars of their Salzburg experiences and campus activities, for use with Program website and collateral. SJSU Salzburg Program Website. Help upgrade the design and functionality of the Program’s website. Project conducted by Danielle Case (2011 Salzburg Scholar) and Bill Reckmeyer (Director) with support from the DBH Communications Agency.
Global Citizenship Tributes. Develop tributes and other forms of recognition to celebrate global citizenship on campus, including awards for SJSU colleagues who are outstanding global citizens. Project conducted by Danielle Case (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Cynthia Duong (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Bill Reckmeyer (Director), and Joan Torne (2011 Salzburg Fellow).
SJSU Salzburg Speakers. Identify SJSU Salzburg Fellows and Scholars who are willing to share their expertise on different global issues by serving as guest speakers in SJSU classes, delivering public talks, or commenting on selected topics for SJSU Public Affairs. Develop annual series of campus-wide presentations by selected Fellows and Scholars. Project conducted by Katie Louey (2011 Salzburg Scholar) and Bill Reckmeyer (Director).
SJSU Salzburg Funding. Develop endowments and/or other regular sources of financing to fund scholarships for SJSU Salzburg Scholars/Fellows and support variety of Program activities that help globalize the University. Activities
Salzburg Scholars Club. Lead Salzburg Scholars Club and secure funding for club activities from Associated Students, including support for SJSU Salzburg Program events in 2011-2012. Project conducted by Janet Bingham (President & 2011 Salzburg Scholar), Frankie Kellett (Vice President & 2011 Salzburg Scholar), and Amirissa Mina (Past President & 2010 Salzburg Scholar) with Bill Reckmeyer (Director) as Faculty Advisor.
Global Health Club. Build on founding efforts by Mojgan Mohammadi (2010 Salzburg Scholar) and Dwayne Abella (2010 Salzburg Scholar) to expand the club’s campus-wide connections. Project conducted by Kathleen de Leon (2011 Salzburg Scholar) and Asmara Hoo (2011 Salzburg Scholar), in coordi-nation with Laurie Morgan (2008 Salzburg Fellow & GHA Advisor) and Kathleen Roe (2011 Salzburg Fellow).
Global Citizenship Dialogue. Continue series of brown bag lunches each semester to discuss globalization, global citizenship, global affairs, and how to globalize SJSU. Project conducted by Jade Law (2011 Salzburg Fellow), Katie Louey (2011 Salzburg Scholar), and Deanna Peck (2009 Salzburg Fellow).
Professional Development. Create and offer a variety of professional development mini-courses for SJSU Salzburg Scholars, such as public speaking and meeting facilitation, to enhance their leadership effectiveness as global citizens. Project conducted by Janet Bingham (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Cynthia Duong (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Alberto Gutierrez (2011 Salzburg Scholar), and Katie Louey (2011 Salzburg Scholar) in coordination with the Salzburg scholars Club, Beth von Till (2007 & 2010 Salzburg Fellow), and David Steele (2010 Salzburg Fellow).
Global Leadership Academy. Continue development and implementation of a pilot program in the College of Business to offer a variety of leadership training opportunities for student leaders transitioning into CoB (http://www.sjsu.edu/cob/Students/LeadershipSS/). Project conducted by Justin Lau (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Soon Khen OwYong (2010 Salzburg Scholar), David Steele (2010 Salzburg Fellow), and Danielle Ynostroza (2010 Salzburg Scholar).
Language Conversation Program. Continue refining and implementing a consistent program to partner SJSU students with inter-national students. Project conducted by Jade Law (2011 Salzburg Fellow).
Afghan Ambassador Program. Seven professors from Herat University in Afghanistan will be coming to SJSU for one semester. The first group will arrive in Fall, 2012, and the second in Spring, 2013. To facilitate their integration into American and campus culture, we are establishing a triad of support. One SJSU student and one SJSU faculty/staff/administrator will be assigned to each Afghan professor. Beginning immediately, the ambassadors should email the professors, introducing themselves, and initiate occasional Skype voice sessions. Once the Afghan professors come to campus, the ambassadors should make sure the professors are introduced/taken to sporting events, coffees with different departments on campus, cultural events, etc. Looking for seven students and seven faculty/staff member to serve as ambassadors, starting immediately. Hungary Start-Up. Develop marketing and PR strategies for an emerging high-tech start-up firm in Hungary, to provide hands-on international experiences for SJSU students. Project conducted by Tim Hendrick (2011 Salzburg Fellow) and Beth von Till (2006/2010 Salzburg Fellow), with support from DBH Team.
Student Global Careers. Develop a program to identify and promote awareness of different international career options following graduation, in cooperation with SJSU’s Career Center. Project conducted by Katie Louey (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Cynthia Ly (2011 Salzburg Scholar), Maribel Martinez (2008 Salzburg Fellow), and Deanna Peck (2009 Salzburg Fellow).
Events
Classes Without Quizzes. Organize and offer a set of three sessions on Global Citizenship @ SJSU for the Classes Without Quizzes day (10/8/11), sponsored by the SJSU Alumni Association as part of Homecoming Week festivities.
